1. Read The Harlem RenaissancePeople moved from rural to urban areas, and from the agricultural South to the industrialized urban centers of the North. The migration of African-Americans from the South to the North brought upheaval and created a new cultural movement. This migration of African-Americans from the South to the North as well as the grouping of many writers, artists, and thinkers in New York City’s Harlem neighborhood became known as the Harlem Renaissance. This is the modern name for the movement that celebrated African-American life through story, poetry, drama, song, visual arts, and more. During the 1920s and 1930s, people associated with the movement also began to promote the ideas and beliefs associated with the modern Civil Rights Movement.
